I just saw ABOUT FACE, a documentary about the rise of the first super models. Photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders interviewed all the greats: Isabella Rossellini, Christie Brinkley, Beverly Johnson, Paulina Porizkova, Jerry Hall, China Machado, Christy Turlington, Cheryl Tiegs, and my favorite Carmen Dell’Orefice (pictured left). The film touched on weight, drugs, how they were discovered, women of color break-throughs and ageing. They all had wonderful stories and when it was over I was delighted and surprised to see that the filmmaker brought out two the the models with him (Beverly Johnson and China Machado) to answer questions and discuss the film. I walked away wanting with a greater appreation of the beauty of women of all colors and a secret wish to look exactly like Carmen Dell’Orefice when I am 70.

I have been spending the weekend watching the 90's BBC series House of Eliott. I swear that it was written for me. A period television program, or should I say programme, set in the 1920's. It centers around two sisters Beatrice and Evie, who started with nothing and built a modern and successful fahion house in a world of men who just didn't believe that 2 silly girls could run a business.

The entire 3 seasons are on You Tube. Here is the first episode from the first season. Check it out and I bet you'll be hooked, even for the vintage clothes alone!

Getting in to shop the Versace for H&M line (in Torino, Italy) was a little like camping out for choice concert tickets or trying to get into a hot club when you're not on the list. I arrived at a fairly early time to find that bouncers were working the door. For the first half of the day you needed to purchase a wrist band, wait in line and the go in 10 at a time. If you did not purchase a wrist band you had to wait until 1pm to shop the line freely. Once inside, where I wasn't allowed to take pictures, I found out that most of the leather pieces i.e. the studded leather dress etc, were not and never going to be at my H&M. Disappointed, I walked out empty handed but it was for sure a winning day for H&M whom for one day made shopping at this discount store, exclusive.

The Nightmares Fear Factory haunted house in Niagara Falls, Ontario Canada maintains a Flikr stream of photos of people snapped inside the haunted house attraction at mid-scare. Notice 1.) 150 Years of Fashion in Italy

I love a good vintage fashion show and lucky me there is a new exhibition happing at the famous Savoy residence La Venaria Reale, celebrating 150 years of fashion in Italia.

The exhibition narrates the story of Italian fashion from Unification to this day as seen through the expert eyes of two protagonists of the fashion scene: costume designer and 1994 Academy Award Winner Gabriella Pescucci and fashion journalist Franca Sozzani, editor-in-chief of Vogue Italia since 1988.

The exhibition is a fascinating journey through Italian history and creativity, cinema, fiction and modern taste. The display takes up two floors of the Reggia and inaugurates the new exhibition spaces of the Rooms of the Arts that correspond to two different phases in the history of Italian fashion.

Bring the Glamour Back to Air Travel

I read an article this morning in in the International Harold Tribune about bringing glamour back into the airlines. I am fully behind this. Travel should be fun and glamorous. Partly due to that horrid event whose 10th anniversary is next week, air travel has steadily become more and more miserable. My aunt was a United Airlines Stewardess in the 60's, 70's and 80's. She has told me story after story of her glamorous adventures in Europe, Asia, and Africa. To keep up the glamour reputation about the stewardess lifestyle she was told how much to weigh, what deodorant to wear, how to walk, and of course how to dress. She had to look sexy but be able to save lives at the same time in the unlikely event of an emergency. At 35 she would have been forced to retire if in the 80's the union had not fought that unfair rule. She has saved all of her vintage uniforms which I hope to inherit on day. Now Cynthia Rowley has been commissioned to design the new United uniforms, not a bad choice United.

I mention my aunt because her first hand accounts have always influenced me on how one should travel. Dress up, look like you belong in first class and people will treat you like you are in first class. My heart sinks when I watch the people loading onto a packed flight in sweats and flip flops carrying a pillow.With the mad love of Mad Men (remember the episode where Don had a fling with the stewardess) and the new Pan Am TV drama starting in the Fall I feel like the time is right to bring the glam back to air travel.

I love a beautiful vintage fur coat. A 70's funkadelic jacket or a 50's chic stoll, they are all gorgeous. However, whenever I try one on (a vintage one I don't care for or endorse the new ones) it feels strange. Wearing fur has never gone out of fashion in Italy like it has in the US, it might even be more popular than ever. I look at some of these lovely pieces on Etsy and I wonder, Where would I wear this to?

Hooooooray it's Fall! Fall for me brings out my love for all things Pendleton. So what do I do on the first day of September? I make my first Pendleton purchase of the season. I can't wait to get my hands on the new bag I got from pascalvintage.

We went out for a lovely sea side dinner where all of the food was served family style so we got a gigiantic plate of ravoli that took up half of the table! The most difficult thing about choosing an outfit at the sea is the Vespa factor. We take the scooter everywhere here and wearing a dress while zipping along the coastline could lead to random flashing....just saying.

I have often said that of all the stores they don't have in Italy, I miss Target the most. This has never been more apparent than now as the Missoni (an Italian brand!!) gear up to release their epic collection for Target on September 13th. I have to ask every family member I have to try and snag a piece for me but I am dying to know if you will be shopping it and what pieces are you going for?

We almost got away with a nice mild August until this weekend. Ba ba ba...the heat wave arrived. Remember that in Italy, that is no air con. Even if you go to the movies. The trick is to open all of the windows in the house and hope that that creates an air flow. I also made homemade lemonade which was a nice treat. I have learned to hand make many of my favorite foods because they are no where to be found in Italy. But they do have gelato, in many many cooling flavors. Some people go crazy when it's hot and there is no air conditioning. For example right now there is a protest march going on outside my window. All the waving of the banners creates a slight breeze.

It seems that Banana Republic has caught Mad Men fever. The retail store has just released a limited edition collection inspired by everybody's favorite AMC show. There is a line for both men and women, which I love because who doesn't want a Don Draper look alike, am I right ladies?!
