Vintage Fashion Show Tuesdays

Bill Blass Spring 1995

Hello 1970's

Walking past the H&M windows yesterday I was struck by how retro the mannequins were looking.
It made me want to watch Dazed and Confused because the girls and their Texas High School Suburban style is awesome and looks just the H&M's spring line. A pair of those sexy jeans have to become my "top priority of the summer".

Sad News: Elizabeth Taylor dies at the age of 79

My uncle used to tell me that Elizabeth Taylor was the most beautiful woman in the world. He was right. I remember one summer, while most of the neighborhood kids were playing outside, I was inside watching Cleopatra. The 3 hour epic was playing on HBO that summer and I must have watched it a dozen times. I was captivated by Liz's on screen presence and the chemistry between her and Richard Burton whom I must say wasn't too bad of a look'er himself. And let's not forget her costumes! Oh the costumes...where are they now? I didn't see, or understand for that matter, Butterfield 8 until I was a tad older and I need to watch Cat on a Hot Tin Roof again for sure. I actually watched her biography on A&E only last January where a clip was shown of her saying that she never wanted to play the Queen of the Nile but the studio wouldn't stop calling her. Finally just to shut them up, she told them she would only do the film for a million dollars thinking that such an outrageous salary for an actress would be refused. When they agreed she had to say yes. So glad she did.
One of the best lines from the bio was when she was returning from her honeymoon with her 5th (and 6th) husband Richard Burton, a reporter asked her "Do you think this one will last?" and she snapped back at him, "Watch your mouth!" and walked on. Love it.
An interesting parallel occurred to me. It was announced last summer that Angelina Jolie is to play Cleopatra in the upcoming adaption of the book 'Queen of the Nile, Cleopatra: A Life' by Stacy Schiff. I really can't imagine anyone else to fill the shoes. The similarities are striking. Both are gorgeous brunettes. Both are/were the highest paid actresses. They both stared as damaged women in mental hospitals Jolie in Girl, Interupted and Taylor in Suddnley Last Summer. Both do alot of charity work, Jolie for United Nations and Taylor for AIDS. Both stole married men from other actresses, Jolie Brad Pitt from Jenifer Aniston and Taylor Edie Fisher from Debbie Reynolds. Both have had their fair share of marriages Jolie on her third with still time to catch up on Taylor's 7 (8 if you count Burton twice). I could go on. Needless to say I am looking forward to seeing the new Cleopatra but I don't think that Liz's could ever be replaced.
